Our in-house engineering team is the critical link between your design specifications and our ASME-certified shop floor. We take your engineered plans, P&IDs, and performance requirements and create detailed fabrication drawings, ensuring every component, weld, and finish is designed for manufacturability, compliance, and seamless integration into your facility.

Our In-House Engineering Expertise

Our engineering department consists of 12 dedicated professionals, including two Professional Engineers (PE) and a Mechanical Engineer, with an average of 15 years of industry experience. This team ensures your project is executed with precision and technical excellence. All personnel are proficient in the latest versions of AutoCAD and have fully implemented 3D modeling to provide comprehensive design validation and clear communication throughout the project lifecycle.

From Customer Specs to Fabrication-Ready Drawings

Our process is designed to validate and optimize your design for successful fabrication. We use advanced 3D modeling and analysis software to ensure every detail is accounted for before the first plate is cut.

Detailed Vessel Modeling: We create comprehensive 3D models from your specifications, detailing every nozzle, manway, internal component, and support structure.
Code Compliance & Calculation: We perform all necessary calculations to verify that the design meets the stringent requirements of ASME Section VIII, API 650/620, and other relevant codes.
Material & Weld Specification: We develop the detailed weld procedures (WPS) required for your specified materials, including high-performance alloys like Duplex 2205 and Hastelloy.
Structural & Seismic Analysis: We conduct full structural analysis for legs, lugs, and platforms, including calculations for wind and seismic loading as required by your project location.

Initial Review & Proposal: We start by thoroughly reviewing your specifications to prepare a detailed and accurate proposal.
Approval Drawings: Upon project kickoff, we submit a complete set of detailed approval drawings for your team's review and formal sign-off.
Final Fabrication Drawings: Once approved, we issue certified "For Construction" drawings that guide our ASME-certified fabrication team through every step of the build.

In-House Design Capabilities

Stainless Fabrication has in-house capabilities to perform a variety of vessel design. From large field fabricated tanks down to small intricate pharmaceutical vessels, SFI personnel have the expertise to design vessels to meet customer needs. For example:

Stainless steel tanks and vessels of varying sizes and applications

SFI's value-added engineering supports customers, our Regional Managers and production by providing high quality equipment documentation including but not limited to:

Conceptual sketches, assembly drawings and full detailed approval drawings and revisions
We can provide a file containing a simplified 3D tank model that can be added to customer plans
Code/Structural, Heat Transfer and Agitation calculations
Bills of material and cut sheets

Drawings and approvals

All projects will be modeled in Autodesk Inventor and the drawings will be created within Inventor. 3D modeling allows the Designer to physically see the tank as it will be when complete and from all sides and vantage points. 3D tank models ensure proper placement of fittings while avoiding clearance issues and potential shipping problems.

Lead time for approval drawings is typically 3-5 weeks depending on the complexity of the design, information available, workload, etc.

Our Prebuy Program is a value-added service offered to customers to improve production lead time by allowing us to order major materials prior to completion of the approval drawing phase.

When requested, "As Built" drawings are provided after project completion and will incorporate any changes that were made during production.

When required, PE-stamped drawings and calculations are done in-house for most states.

The majority of our tank projects go to Engineering prior to estimating and developing a proposal. Having vessels reviewed and sized by an Engineer early on in the process means we are able to bid the project the way it should be built, right from the start.
