WOW, NICE MIRROR
IS THAT A MIRROR, OR WHAT?
It shines and reflects like a mirror, but it’s no mirror. This is the interior of a 35 liter mixing vessel destined for manufacturing pharmaceuticals. Unlike a mirror that uses a coating on glass to create the reflective surface, the interior of a stainless steel vessel must be mechanically polished and then electropolished to produce this reflective finish.
Once electropolished, SFI Quality Control Inspectors validate the roughness average (Ra) using a Contact Profilometer. This instrument measures and reports the surface profile as a number – in this case, a maximum of 15 Ra was required by the customer. QC takes random readings from various areas to ensure the vessel interior complies with the specification.
Electropolishing results in a smooth, passive surface that is easy to clean and corrosion resistant.
