Past

SFI opened for business in May 1985 as a field fabricator of stainless steel vessels, utilizing the three owners as the crew. Our business increased very quickly and additional hands were hired, many of which still work at SFI today. Within a couple years, SFI began building shop tanks as well, adding ASME certification to their capabilities. The company expanded until it occupied five buildings on Springfield's east side and in the fall of 1993, SFI moved into their new 30,000 square foot production facility with 7,200 square feet of office space. The new facility provided much needed room for growth (18 acres) as well as easy access to the airport (one-half mile) and Interstate 44 (one mile).

Non-destructive examination capability was brought in-house with the addition of x-ray equipment in 1997. Designated personnel were trained and certified to x-ray welds as required by customer specifications and code.

Major expansion - the Electropolish Bay was added in 2003. This addition marked a major shift in SFI sales and marketing by allowing us to compete in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Technology upgrade in 2004 with the purchase of new servers.

Two large pieces of equipment - a computer based plasma burner and a Haas precision CNC lathe - were added in 2006.

In 2008, SFI was purchased by Exchange Income Corp.(formerly Exchange Industrial Income Fund,) based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, providing opportunities for growth and expansion into new markets and geographical regions.

Technology upgrade in 2009 with addition of a new VoIP phone system that included new high-end switches to handle the network traffic and bridged our three buildings together. Also upgraded several in sales force to iPhones allowing them to send and receive emails by phone.

Present

SFI has grown from the three original owners to averaging 150 employees. Nearly half of our personnel have worked at SFI 10 years, many much longer. SFI shop and field fabricated vessels can be found in nearly every state in the U.S. and in several countries outside the U.S.

Since moving into our new building in 1993, SFI has expanded several times.

This photo shows the property at 4455 W Kearney including the plant, offices, field warehouse, and staging/storage areas. The offices are located just south of the plant and are separated by a short breezeway. The field operations warehouse is behind the plant (to the north) with a storage yard behind it.The additions to the plant can be seen by the lighter roof color. The last addition, the electropolish bay, is to the far east and runs the full length of the plant.

SFI leases 25,000 square feet of production space in a building on the south side of Kearney Street (see arrow at top left). Our main facility sits on 18 acres on the north side of Kearney Street (see arrow at bottom right).

Future

SFI is ever-evolving.

We expend significant resources on growth and are committed to doing the best job possible. We enjoy the challenges that come with building different types of equipment and working with customers from a wide variety of industries. SFI personnel are constantly looking for ways to improve all facets of the business from technology (computers, software, etc.) to equipment used in fabrication processes, to the way we literally perform our jobs - whether in the field, factory or office.

We welcome opportunities to expand into new markets where our expertise can be utilized and we can grow.
